Update on the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease
11/27/2023

We were notified by the LA County Veterinary Public Health about a Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease in dogs of unknown origin. It has been reported in Malibu, Pacific Palisades and El Segundo. Similar outbreaks have been described in both Oregon and Colorado. Clinical signs in dogs include acute onset of respiratory issues of coughing, nasal discharge and difficulty breathing. In some cases, the dogs become ill rapidly and are in need of hospitalization. At this time there is no further information on the cause of the illness, how to diagnose or how to treat it.

The Veterinary Public Health Program is asking local Veterinary professionals to take the following steps:

  • Identify possible cases
  • Practice Infection control
  • Perform PCR testing prior to starting antibiotics
  • Report Suspected and confirmed cases

The Veterinary Public Health Program advises owners:

  • Limit dog to dog contact as the best preventative
  • Avoid areas with high populations of dogs including day care, boarding kennels, grooming facilities, and dog parks
  • Reduce direct contact with affected pets
  • Isolate sick dogs at home for 28 days from first onset of illness
  • Quarantine exposed dogs at home for 14 days to monitor them for clinical signs
  • Make sure your animal is up to date on all vaccines including Bordetella and Canine Influenza Virus

**Fully vaccinated dogs can still get sick

This veterinary center is absolutely amazing! First, I have no affiliation with them aside from their extraordinary service & care for my dog they just treated. They were able to get me in on a Saturday with an emergent issue for my dog. All their staff was kind, capable & excellent communicators. They put me at ease during a very stressful & acute injury my dog experienced. They are very highly skilled & have state-of-the-art technology to assist with surgery & recovery.

Not only was my experience excellent, but my dig’s was as well which was evidenced by her pulling at the leash to go BACK to the vet. At every other vet I’ve gone to, she resists going back. This was incredibly surprising especially since her injury was so bad. The staff here truly care for the animals they treat & ensure they have the best treatment & follow-up care possible. I would recommend this vet every day of the week & more!

While visiting from Miami my beloved sphynx cat ended up with a horrible skin problem. PAW WAS AMAZING! Not only did they get me an appointment within two hours of my phone call, they were so kind, thoughtful, and understanding of my situation. Everything about them was 10 outta 10. They spent time with my pet and me and went through several treatment options, letting me choose what was best for me, my budget, and my pet.

The office was clean and beautiful, the staff was friendly and welcoming, and parking was a breeze. I would highly recommend PAW Veterinary Center. I have worked in the medical field for almost 40 years and have a hard time trusting when it comes to treatment and diagnosis. I felt like Dr. LaMoyne treated my furless baby as she would have cared for her own pet and that meant the world to me. 💜😻
